What is a double euro cylinder?

A double euro cylinder is one of the most common types of cylinder used in uPVC, composite and aluminium doors. “Double” means it is keyed on both sides, so the door can only be locked or unlocked with a key, inside and out. This differs from a key-and-turn cylinder, which has a thumb turn on the inside.

If you are not sure which you need, our guide to the types of door locks explains the difference, or you can see the full range on our cylinders page.

When a double euro cylinder is the right choice

A double euro cylinder is the best option when there is glass in or beside the door, such as a glazed panel or a nearby window. Because there is no thumb turn to reach, an intruder who breaks the glass cannot simply turn the lock from inside. It is a simple way to add security to a vulnerable door.

One safety note: because a double cylinder needs a key to exit, you should keep a key accessible near the door for emergencies, or choose a key and turn cylinder instead on a main escape route. Our locksmith will advise on the safest option for your door.

Anti-snap double euro cylinders

The weak point of any euro cylinder is snapping, where an intruder breaks the cylinder to reach the mechanism. It is the most common way uPVC doors are forced. So, we recommend fitting an anti-snap double euro cylinder rated to British Standard, engineered to break at a sacrificial line and keep the door secure. Ask us about anti-snap upgrades when we visit.
